The song, by 刘欢 (Liu Huan), was made to provide encouragment to all the workers that lost their jobs in the late 90s. After China opened up to the West in 1978 and Deng Xiaoping reformed the country's economics, many companies became privatized. Although these changes brought ecnomic propserity to the country, it also caused many state-owned companies to close down in the late 90s. The shutting down of these companies led to huge amounts of low-skilled workers to also lose their job.
