This is the happy Lunar New Year song by Zhang Lu (張露) recorded in 1952. Ying chun hua (迎春花) means welcome spring flower or winter jasmine in English. Lunar New Year marks the beginning of spring. The winter jasmine blooms from November to March, earlier than most flowers. It is native to China and has either yellow or white flowers with 6 petals that open on the bare stems. Teresa Teng (鄧麗君) also sang this song. But Zhang Lu was the original singer. Zhang Lu was discovered by a neighbor who worked for a radio station humming or singing a song to put her brother to sleep. She pursued an entertainment career to help her widowed mother. During her career, her name was Romanized as Chang Loo. That was based on the Wade-Giles system, the modern system used in China is called pinyin. The pronunciation did not change, only the way it is spelled.

The house must be cleaned and the children must behave during Lunar New Year. It is a bad omen to start the new year with a messy house or naughty children.
