Description
The iconic DC (Direct Current) EMU (Electric Multiple Unit) trains of Mumbai were and hallmark of the city's suburban railway system for many years. These trains were introduced in the 1920s and operated mainly on the Western and Central Lines. They were powered by direct current, hence the term "DC."
In the 2010s, however, the DC trains began to be replaced by the more modern and efficient AC (Alternating Current) trains. These AC trains have higher capacity, improved speed, and efficiency, making them more suitable for Mumbai's growing population. The switch to AC trains was part of the upgrade to the city's railway network.
Despite their replacement, the DC EMUd trains remain a nostalgic symbol of Mumbai's transportation history, as they played a significant role in the daily commute of millions of Mumbaikars for decades.
