This most-famous British recording of the WW2 era featured a simple novachord accompaniment to the plaintive vocal by 22 year-old Vera and contributed to her reputation as “the Forces’ Sweetheart” during the war years. It was the first of several recorded versions that she made over the decades, but the most commonly-heard one (with full orchestra and chorus) was released in the early 1950s (listen here: https://youtu.be/3ofqEvjyPVs )
