So DC was an option to see this show because I thought it'd be cool to see Origami Angel in their hometown playing to their crowd. Nope, didn't happen. Sold out fast. Figures, right? Either way, I was happy they played The Canal Club.

Instead of shooting from stage side (courtesy of Jordan, the 7'1" security guy for my Anti-Flag video), I opted to park myself in front next to the right column. Actually, I wedged myself in that spot so well that I was practically immovable when the band started playing and the crowd went nuts.

Because I was so close, I had to switch to ultra-wide and left it there. Sunny from Hate5Six was there to shoot as well, and I had a chance to chat with him. I thought it was cool he remembered me from FEST and we talked music and shop. He told me he flew in from Philly and was heading to Portland next. Wow.

Just like my FEST videos, you'll see Sunny in the far left side of the screen. To the right of the drummer, you'll see the drum cam set-up. My buddy, Mike, told me he thought those shots were awesome. I agreed with him wholeheartedly. I got to watch him set it up and do some work with it on his iPad.

Because this crowd was going nuts, I got jostled only a little bit. Wedging against the right pillar helped me stay stable with my shots. What you'll see a lot of is Jordan, catching crowdsurfers and escorting them off the stage. What's funny is watching Ryland pausing to let the audience members/Jordan move along before moving forward!

So let's talk about the sound. For Pool Kids, I got great, loud sound. I had the benefit of hovering near a stage monitor to record from. With that, guitar amplification helps fill in the sound so what I record is complete. When it came to Origami Angel's sound, it was a bit lacking.

Ryland plays through (I'm assuming) a VST pedal (?) which was why a guitar amp was non-existent on stage. I looked at this pedal set-up and a large silver box with a huge readout was what gave his guitar its sound. It was a direct plug-in that went straight to the soundboard.

When I recorded, vocals and drums could be heard with the guitar faintly except during softer portions of the set. The guitar could be heard through the P.A. and because I was besides it, I was getting the bleed-over, which wasn't much. Nothing I could do about that, unfortunately. So I let the video record through it all.

These things happen and it's a part of shooting fan-shot videos. I'm cool with it because now I'll know what to expect when I don't see any guitar amplification while recording! Luckily, Sunny got a board recording so if you see his video, it'll be crystal clear (and perfect) compared to mine! LOL

During Origami Angel's encore, my finger accidentally figured into my shot and stayed their for two songs. Luckily, I was able to edit it out of the shot through some iPhone Photos app editing!

Oh, and I went minimal for this shoot: iPhone, small mic (Shure MV88) and the MoviePro app. I did make use of a wrist strap that I attached to the phone case so I could retrieve it quickly should it get smacked out of my hand!

Remember that issue I had with my Alvvays video where the encore sound was softer than the main set? I encountered that situation here, too. Something to do with my video editor now... Ugh... Anyhoo, I found a solution and glad it worked out here. Levels normalized from beginning to end!
