Description
🌸 If you're planning to GROW WILDFLOWERS to bloom in SPRING, get them planted NOW. While you still have a bit of warm weather left! Yes, even you, mild winter peeps (like me in zone 9B)
🌸 In the past I have waited until right before the rains start, somewhere in early to mid November to plant my wildflowers. Well, the rains came down heavy and washed away all the emerging seedlings. And those that made it through the rains, just struggled, and eventually got killed off by the cold weather.
🌸So this year, I started planting in waves, first wave on October 1
MY TOP 4 LEARNINGS:
1️⃣PREPARE THE BED: Rake it smooth, saturate it, make sure the seeds had a nice soft moist bed to land in. Contrary to popular belief, you can't just scatter in hard dry cracked clay and expect the seeds to magically germinate.
2️⃣ STAGGER PLANT: Don't plant all at once! Hedge against unexpected events, like a heatwave which could kill off all the young seedlings.
3️⃣ KEEP SEEDS MOIST: This means I had to water every day, sometimes twice, but this is the price I pay when planting in hot weather! Those seeds can't dry out.
4️⃣REMOVE WEEDS: Keep your eagle eye open for weeds. Over the years you will learn to recognize them even from their first leaves. WEEDS are so much easy to keep in check when they are tiny!
🌸 Hopefully if I grow these wild flowers successfully once, then they will come back naturally and at the right time every year, and I will never need to plant them again...well, here's hoping🤞
