Description
Excerpt from Kunqu opera "The Palace of Eternal Youth, Scene 50, The Lovers’ Reunion", screenplay by Hong Sheng (1645-1704)
Performed by Luo Chenxue and Yuan Jia, Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe.
Edit from the 2025 Spring Festival Chinese Opera Gala presented by CMG

WEAVING MAID:
Now start the Rainbow Garment Dance. (The dance begins.)
ALL:
Stately as storks erect on mountain summits,
Bright as the rainbow in the western sky,
Sweet as the blossoms scented damsels scatter;
Poising like swans or drawing back like phoenixes,
Our fans and garments move in unison,
Whirling at every note;
Like the nymph that glided across the waves,
Or the mountain goddess that wandered in the clouds,
We suit our garments to the melody;
Then the angels step it daintily and sing,
Beating the rhythm on their instruments.
Like crimson blossoms in the breeze
Or floating clouds beside the Milky Way,
No earthly dancing can compare with this:
We dance on in the void before the Heavenly Palace,
Enraptured like the fairy maid of old,
Or the fair princess who play the flute with her lover,
Combining heavenly bliss with earthly joy.
To add fresh charms to this celestial music,
Now round and round they whirl in the final movement;
The silvery moon is bright,
The jade clepsydra echoes deep,
And the Rainbow Garment Dance is surely immortal.
