One foggy morning in late autumn before winter, the air chilled Edmund's breath as he went out to Fogwillow Pond to do some writing before class. He saw three rocks out in the water he hadn't noticed before. A crow was perched on the largest rock.

A boat emerged from the fog. It took a moment for Edmund to make out the occupant as Silas, the caretaker. He stopped the boat by the rocks and the crow fluttered off into the fog. Even from the distance, he looked into Edmund's eyes, pressed his face into a grimace and shook his head before reaching into the water.

With one hand and no effort, Silas pulled the body of a young girl from the pond and placed her corpse in the boat. The shock Edmund felt was palpable to Silas when he looked back at Edmund. Silas rowed the boat into the fog and disappeared.
