A Taste of Honey

A Taste of Honey is a song composed by Bobby Scott and Ric Marlow for the American version of the British play of the same name (which underpins the 1961 film A Taste of Honey). Originally it was an instrumental song. It was first recorded in 1960 by Bobby Scott's own orchestra. The most famous version of A Taste of Honey as an instrumental is that of Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass from 1965.
It is likely that the lyrics (presumably by Ric Marlow) were written later than the melody. The first to record a vocal version of the song was American singer Lenny Welch in 1962. It has since been recorded by many celebrities, including Barbra Streisand, Trini Lopez, The Hollies, Tom Jones, The Kingston Trio and The Beatles.

Instrumental versions
One of the song's composers, Bobby Scott, first recorded the song with his orchestra in 1960. It appeared on an LP also called A Taste of Honey. The song received a Grammy Award in the Best Instrumental Theme category.
Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass had the most success with the song in 1965. The song was on the LP Whipped Cream & Other Delights and was also released as a single. It reached seventh place on the Billboard Hot 100. The recording won four Grammy Awards in 1966: in the categories 'Record of the Year', 'Best Instrumental Performance', 'Best Instrumental Arrangement' and 'Production & Engineering'.
