Above Northern Lights Mannheim Steamroller - Ed Wilson
Vocalist Gene Nery, who sang Above the Northern Lights on the platinum-selling Mannheim Steamroller Christmas Night CD (and the 25th Anniversary 2-CD set), performs the song with the Orcas Choral Society in a live Holiday Concert, with pre-recorded instrumentals by Mannheim Steamroller.
Nery and Northern Lights lyricist Ed Wilson both live on Orcas Island (WA), and Composer Chip Davis has visited the island. Catherine Pederson conducts the Orcas Choral Society.
The first time I ever saw the Northern Lights, I was flying over Chicago with Chip Davis of Mannheim Steamroller-American Gramaphone. The next two times were from my home in the Pacific Northwest.
Each time I saw the lights, I made a connection with the centuries of humans who have stared up and become awestruck by so much color and mysterious movement across the night sky.
So, when Chip asked me to write the lyrics for the song Northern Lights I was thrilled . His guidance was simply to imagine that I was telling my daughters about the Aurora Borealis on Christmas night, when upon looking up, we see the "Northern Lights" appear.
Hearing a chorus of human voices accompany Gene Nerys vocal solo was also an awesome experience, Ed said. Gene and many of the Orcas Choral Society singers have seen the Northern Lights in-person, too. You could hear it in their voices!
