Description
Six months prior to this performance, Al Green's life changed forever when Mary Woodson, a woman who had walked away from her family to be with Green, attacked him in his bathroom with a pan of boiling hot grits on October 18, 1974. Woodson then shot and killed herself in Green's Memphis home. Devastated by the ordeal, Green grew closer to his Christian origins and his performances soon began to showcase a dichotomous fusion of 'soul' and 'church' stylings. By 1978, Green would abandon secular music altogether and, instead, begin a considerably successful career as a gospel artist.
Prior to the transformation, however, Green appeared on Soul Train on April 6, 1975 and performed four selections ~ "Sha-La-La (Make Me Happy)," "L-O-V-E (Love)," "God Blessed Our Love" and "Take Me to the River".
This video features the lesser known number, "God Blessed Our Love". It is truly one of Al Green's most masterful TV performances.... Enjoy!
