Description

This is one of my favorite Beatles songs, and it was featured in the movie A Hard Day's Night (1964). Written mainly by Paul, it features lead spanish-classical guitar by George Harrison

Recorded on February 27th, 1964 at EMI studios, the backing track featured John on his Gibson J-160e acoustic guitar, George on his Ramirez Estudio classical guitar, Paul on Hofner bass, and Ringo on bongos/claves

also aids in uncovering some interesting things

For example, in the film John plays Fsharp minor with this thumb wrapped around the top of the neck. But the EMI footage reveals he was actually playing the chord with a normal barred shape

I'm using my 1966 Gibson J-160e for John's acoustic. It has Ernie Ball pure nickel rock and roll 11-52 strings on it. I'm micing both guitars with my Neumann TLM-103 condenser

For George's guitar, I'm playing an Admira Irene Spanish guitar. I'm using a pick, as George also did (as seen in the film)

Interesting Notes:
0:05 John plays an E6 chord here 022120
0:24 John plays a B chord with his thumb wrapped around the top of the neck, as seen in the film. So he's mostly playing XX4442
0:26 John does not play E6 here, just a normal E chord. But he hits the Low E string hard
0:28 John hits the E chord particularly hard here
0:33 George plays a 'ghost' note on the g-string, which means his fingers were not pressed down correctly so you mostly hear a dead 'plunk' note. I confirmed this in the isolated audio
0:40 George hits another ghost note on the b-string
0:42 George hits a ghost note again on the g-string
0:45 John plays a B7 chord here
0:55 John stops abruptly after the B barred chord
0:58 John transitions from Csharp-minor to G-sharp-minor chords without releasing his barred index finger, so you always hear the high e-string
1:06 John switches from a barred B chord up high, to an open B7
1:10 John stops abruptly after the Fsharp-minor chord
1:17 George hits the b-string slightly late on the A note
1:21 George hits a ghost note on the g-string
1:25 George hits the high Eb note twice in a row
1:29 The song modulates up to Dm, starting with a G minor chord
1:32 John plays D minor- XX3231
1:37 John plays G minor with the thumb wrapped around. Here you hear him slide from D minor to G minor with the high e-string sliding up as well
2:20 George slides up the A-string from 3rd to 5th fret
2:25 The song ends on D major, John playing X00232
2:26 George does a lot of fast sideways vibrato, as seen in the film
