Dean Martin(1917 – 1995)은 미국의 가수, 코미디언, 영화배우입니다.
그는 20세기 중반 할리우드에서 가장 인기 있었던 엔터테이너 중 한 명이었습니다.
Jerry Lewis와의 콤비로 유명하며, 그와 함께 아주 많은 코미디 영화들에 출연했습니다.
본명은 디노 폴 크로체티(Dino Paul Crocetti)인데, 본인이 존경하는 이탈리아의 테너 니노 마르티니의 이름에서 영감을 얻어 초기 예명을 다이노 마틴(Dino Martin)으로 사용했다가 이후 본명도 Dean Martin으로 개명했습니다.
그는 51편의 영화에 주연으로 출연하였고, Everybody Loves Somebody, That‘s Amore, Volare, Sway, Memories Are Made Of This 등의 히트곡들을 부른 가수로도 활발하게 활동했습니다.
1965년부터 1974년 까지 딘 마틴 쇼라는 인기 TV쇼를 진행하기도 했는데, 이 프로그램은 프랭크 시나트라, 진 켈리, 앤 마그렛, 잭 배니, 토니 베넷 같은 스타들이 게스트로 출연했던 유명 TV쇼였습니다. 이 프로그램이 종영된 직후, 딘 마틴은 1974년부터 "The Dean Martin Celebrity Roast"라는, 미국의 유명 연예인을 약점을 꼬집어 내면서 웃기는 Insult Comedy 형태의 쇼를 진행하였는데, 10명 정도의 연예인이 나와서 서로 상대방을 공격하는 이 TV쇼 역시 아주 많은 인기를 누렸다고 합니다.
"King of Cool"이란 별명의 원조이기도 합니다. 어느 인터뷰에서 딘 마틴의 딸이 자신의 아버지와 함께 영화 스튜디오에서 엘비스 프레슬리와 만났을때 엘비스가 고개를 숙이며 "사람들은 나를 king of rock&roll 이라고 부르지만 너희 아버지는 king of cool이야" 라고 말했다고 합니다. 실제로 엘비스의 창법은 딘 마틴의 창법과 매우 흡사합니다. 엘비스가 본인의 창법에 딘의 것을 참고했는지 확실하지 않지만, 그를 존경했다는 점은 사실인 것 같습니다.
Dean Paul Martin (born Dino Paul Crocetti; June 7, 1917 – December 25, 1995) was an American singer, actor, and comedian. One of the most popular entertainers of the mid-20th century, he was nicknamed "The King of Cool." Martin gained his career breakthrough together with comedian Jerry Lewis, billed as Martin and Lewis, in 1946. They performed in nightclubs and later had numerous appearances on radio and television and in films.
Starting in 1965, Martin was the host of the television variety program The Dean Martin Show, which centered on Martin's singing and comedic talents and was characterized by his relaxed, easy-going demeanor. From 1974 to 1984, he was roastmaster on the popular Dean Martin Celebrity Roast, which drew celebrities, comedians and politicians. Throughout his career, Martin performed in concert stages, nightclubs, audio recordings and appeared in 85 film and television productions.
His best known songs include "Ain't That a Kick in the Head?," "Memories Are Made of This," "That's Amore," "Everybody Loves Somebody," "You're Nobody till Somebody Loves You," "Sway," and "Volare.“
