Description
Here is the lovely Astrud Gilberto with the Walter Wanderley Trio with her vocal cover of "Summer Samba (So Nice)". It was released worldwide on Verve Records in late 1966. Enjoy my DES [Digitally Extracted STEREO] of this mid-60’s ultra-lounge/bossa nova classic.
"Summer Samba" (also known as "So Nice" or its original Portuguese title, "Samba de Verão") is a 1964 bossa nova and jazz standard song by Brazilian composer Marcos Valle, with English-language lyrics by Norman Gimbel. The original Portuguese lyrics are by Paulo Sérgio Valle, the composer's brother.
Astrud Gilberto (born Astrud Evangelina Weinert, March 29, 1940) is a Brazilian samba and bossa nova singer. She gained international attention in the 1960s following her recording of the song "The Girl from Ipanema".
Personnel on this recording:
Astrud Gilberto – Vocals
Walter Wanderley – Arranger, Hammond B-3
Jose Marino – Bass
Claudio Slon – Drums
About the MONO mix:
The audio I used is a mono mixdown of the stereo track from the 1999 compilation CD: ”Divas Exotica”. I mixed it down to mono to make this a true DES. It was originally recorded on horrifically sterile 1st generation transistorized solid-state crap. The engineers washed everything out with an over-abundance of slow reverb, a trick that was often done in this era to mask the poor-sounding equipment. I wanted to breathe a little warmth into this icy-cold recording and give it a better stereo mix so it wouldn’t be so bi-polar and more balanced than the original, where the Hammond B-3 was totally slammed in the Right, the Drums slammed in the Left and Astrud panned dead-center, totally washed-out with a harsh reverb with no stereo effects.
About my DES mix:
For Astrud’s vocal, I removed that horrific over-abundant reverb and replaced it with a nice, crisp, short stereo reverb and mixed her forward just a bit. I panned the Hammond B-3 Left with opposing reverb on the Right. For the Drums, I panned them Right using with opposing reverb into the left. I kept the Bass centered and untouched.
Technical Information:
I used DeMIX PRO to isolate the Vocal, Hammond B-3, Drums and Bass into 4 separate tracks. I used SpectraLayer PRO-7 for stem cleanup [of which there was quite a bit] and reverb removal. Adobe Audition 2020 was used for, Reverb, Delay, EQ and final mixdown. Sonic Studio’s Amarra Luxe Sound Processor was used for post EQ and upsampling. NERO 2019 Platinum used to generate the final video.
