Description
Written in 1899 and officially published in 1901, Augustan Club Waltz is the second known waltz to ever be composed by Scott Joplin, continuing to strengthen the idea to the public eye at the time that he was very well capable of writing the more sophisticated-classic works of the time that were often looked higher upon than that "devil's music" called Ragtime. (Or at least as it was labeled.)
Just as with his first waltz "Harmony Club," Augustan Club Waltz is dedicated to a real life club / brothel which in this case would be located in Sedalia, Missouri. The actual whereabouts on if Joplin had ever became a regular patron to the club remain uncertain and blurred, but with the waltz's dedication to the establishment, it can be assumed for certain that he had made many connections there both inside and out. It is also worthy to note how the waltz is also labeled as "waltzes" on the first page, tying along with the idea of their being a multitude of sections throughout the work. Rather it be called Waltz or Waltzes, the truth can still remain that "Augustan" is truly one of the most beautiful classic works Joplin had ever penned during his early years.
