Description
Ballad of Lugh
(D-Am-C-G)
I.
In Eireann's emerald, verdant vale,
Where bean sidhe winds do wail,
There strode a youth with golden hair
A Shining being fair.
With spear in hand and heart alight,
He came from faerie lands,
To Tara's fortress he travelled
With destiny in hand.
II.
"Who art thou?" cried Nuadha king,
"So full of Shining grace?"
"I am Lugh, of many arts,
And come to take my place.
I smith, I harp, I heal, too,
I game, I craft, I fight—
And if ye seek a worthy soul,
Then test my skill and might."
III.
The gates of Tara opened wide,
The Tribes all hushed with awe,
For never had a godling come
So skilled as now they saw.
He bore the spear that never missed,
The hound that none could flee,
The slingstone sharp, the light of dawn,
His spells could quell the sea.
IV.
When Balor of the Evil Eye
Led Fomhoire legions grim,
'Twas Lugh who rose at Magh Tuireadh
Though odds were stark and slim.
With stone he struck his grandsire down—
The eye that slew laid low,
And Danu’s tribes, with joyful cries,
Did watch the tyrant go.
V.
Now every craft and every skill,
Each harvest, forge, and f lame,
Does whisper still of Lugh’s great hand
And sings of his name’s fame.
For on one foot with one eye closed
Lugh cast an ancient spell
And weakened Balor’s great army
Who to the Danaan fell.
VI.
So raise a glass in summer’s sun,
And Lughnasadh rejoice!
An scal, the phantom, Lugh still lives
in every magic voice.
The Long-Armed one, with shining light,
Who rose when hope was thin—
O sing ye now, the god of skill,
Let Lugh the Bright shine in!
