Description
Barbra and disco. Disco and Barbra. The woman transcends genres, her immense vocal capabilities and her easy charm makes everything she does better. "Happy Days Are Here Again", "People" and "Stoney End" were just a few I was acquainted with on radio and heard her first disco single "Shake Me, Wake Me (When It's Over), became a much desired 12 promo single due to its unique remix was issued in 1975.
I understood the sentiment in "My Heart Belongs To Me" and "New York State OF Mind" where she covered Billy Joel and gave him a glowing review in the album notes. Then "Songbird" album cover with Barbra looking great cradling her sweet little pup. (she didn't have a songbird, so the dog had to do she noted) I guess we can only assume that she is the songbird. "Evergreen" a #1 pop hit she actually wrote herself!
Her albums were available in the family collection next to the stereo in the living room. The audacious cover of Streisand Superman and her super tight glutes. "What's Up Doc" is a comedy classic, a throwback to the zany 40's anything goes caper flicks that I still watch from time to time, she was at her loveliest with Ryan O'Neal as her hapless suitor that was electricity!
So when "The Main Event" came out, I had to go see the movie since the song was already out there and got the disco version 12 single...parts of the song reminded me of Cher's "Take Me Home". Good reason too, both songs were produced by Bob Esty. Barbra's song was co-written with Paul Jabara who had just come off the Grammy winning "Last Dance" for Donna Summer.
The single beat a path to #3 on the Hot100 and stayed there for four weeks! While Bad Girls was #1 and Good Times was #2. The next week Good Times was #1 and #2 was My Sharona and it did not stand a chance. "My Sharona" moved to #1 and pushed Good Times down to #2 the third week and for the fourth and final week.
She was determined to hit #1 with a disco song and her follow up was the Donna Summer duet of "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)" and did just that on the Hot100 for one week and Billboard Disco chart for four weeks.
