Seems like Barry had his ear tuned to the radio when he was writing music. He had a wonderful sound vocally and his musical compositions celebrated the advent of FM radio with his full and polished sound. Clubs were the first to hop on this one, and it went to #15 in January of 1974 on the disco chart while FM radio was just getting into "Mandy", his first #1 Pop hit. It then followed up "Mandy" on the pop chart and it went top 12 at the end of March, 1975. "It's A Miracle" is a bright dance number written with his frequent collaborator, Marty Panzer. I bassed it up and tried to fatten the drums a little without upsetting the natural balance. Manilow was fast becoming America's Sweetheart with his unabashedly romantic songs around this time. Born Barry Alan Pincus on June 17, 1946 in Brooklyn, NY, he studied at Julliard and then became music director for a TV show for a local station. Around that time, has began working at the Continental Baths Nightclub where he met Bette Midler and became her producer. He was the perfect foil for her brassy and sassy persona and her debut, the platinum selling "The Divine Miss M" in 1972. Turning his craft on himself, he garnered a record contract but was strong armed to record a ballad version of "Mandy" who was written by someone else. He saw the logic of their way and recorded it. His second #1 was "I Write The Songs", which seemed autobiographical, but that one was written by ex-Beach Boy Bruce Johnston. This one still sounds pretty fresh to me and takes me back to the age of 14, a good forty years ago.
