for the end round/canon (more on that in a moment): 1st line: Carl on stereo version only (heard here); brian’s vocal was missing for 1996 stereo mix/PS box set, on original mono version it’s brian @ 2:00…and Carl not in the round at all! 2nd line: Bruce (continues throughout) 3rd line: Brian replaces Carl’s Tenor & does the falsetto …”what i’d be…WITHOUT”

Bruce later explained: “Carl sang lead on the song and then the three of us sang the short choral section in the middle of the song…After Carl left the studio, Brian put his voice on Carl's end section part: next, I sang my part; and finally, Brian sang his intended part. And then he doubled all three. He decided that vocally God Only Knows was complete and was very happy with the outcome.”

SO Is it a round or a canon…or a fugue?A round is a type of canon (like Pachelbel’s Canon in D major): the same melody, repeated in different voices, with staggered start times (imitative musical counterpoint), which can be repeated indefinitely (e.g. Row Row Row your boat, frere jacques, three blind mice etc). BUT there’s a 3rd melody which is not repeated (“wiiiithooouuuuut”) which could be considered a countermelody or descant; so technically this section might be considered and “accompanied canon” or maybe a “perpetual canon” or perhaps a “double canon” (or a chaconne?!?!) Music theory ppl what do you think??
