Description
Our rendition of the Swedish medieval ballad «Bergatrollets Frieri». From the fall concert «Til Nord» («To the North») at Kulturkirken Jakob in Oslo, November 3rd 2024.
"Bergatrollets frieri" ("The Courtship of the Mountain Troll") also known as "Herr Mannelig," is a Nordic medieval ballad likely from the 14th century. The story revolves around a female mountain troll proposing to the knight Herr Mannelig. She offers him gifts but is rejected because she is a troll without Christian faith. The troll's defeat makes her desperate, as winning Herr Mannelig would have "lost her affliction," implying a possible curse.
