Description
Songs from the Chinese is a song cycle for tenor and guitar composed in 1957 by Benjamin Britten. It consists of settings of six poems translated from the original Chinese by Arthur Waley. The poems are all taken from one of the five Confucian classic texts, The Book of Songs (Shijing) - a collection of over 305 poems reflecting life across the spectrum of Zhou society over 2,500 years ago. The texts touch on something basic in the human spirit, making them as relevant today as at the time of their creation.
