Black Sabbath's 'Paranoid' Album
Released 1970
Paranoid is the second studio album by English heavy metal band Black Sabbath, released on September 18, 1970, by Vertigo Records in the United Kingdom and on January 7, 1971, by Warner Bros. Records in the United States. Building on the dark, heavy sound of their debut, Paranoid became a defining album of the genre, featuring some of the band’s most iconic songs.
Originally intended to be titled War Pigs, the album was renamed Paranoid after the record label pushed for a more commercially appealing title. The track Paranoid, written as a last-minute addition, became one of Black Sabbath’s most famous songs, featuring a fast-paced riff and urgent lyrics reflecting themes of anxiety and alienation. Other standout tracks include Iron Man, known for its lumbering, metallic riff and apocalyptic lyrics, and War Pigs, a scathing critique of war and political corruption.
Despite initial skepticism from critics, Paranoid was a massive success, reaching No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart and solidifying Black Sabbath’s status as pioneers of heavy metal. Decades later, it remains one of the most influential and enduring albums in rock history.
