Emmit Ellis Jr. (aka) Bobby Rush was born outside Homer, Louisiana, in 1933. He played a diddley bow before picking up a guitar around the age of 11, and his pastor father knew enough about harmonica to play some riffs for your progeny. The family moved to Pine Bluff, Arkansas, in 1948. As a young man, in the late 1940s, he befriended and played with Elmore James in Arkansas until the late 1940s and early 1950s before migrating to Chicago, where he worked with Freddie King, Luther Allison and Jimmy Reed. Rush lit up the R&B charts in the 70s, 80s and 90s with hits like "Chicken Heads", "I Ain't Studdin 'You" and "Sue". At the beginning of the millennium - around the same time he moved to Mississippi, to be close to where his grandparents lived - he started making new inroads into the high profile crossover circuit. Although his fame has steadily increased since then, he hasn't changed much. His shows still feature shake dancers and the same spicy songs, and he sounds as good as ever. For a guy who is about to turn 90, Bobby Rush certainly doesn't let the grass grow under his feet. Bobby Rush, aged 86, survived a fight with CoVid-19 earlier this year and is back with reduced acoustic effort that, in a way, is a continuation of his age at 86. The new album "Rawer Than Raw "lives up to the title. The album was recorded in Jackson over several years with engineer and executive producer Randy Everett and is a sequel to Rush's original album, Raw, his first acoustic work that proved to be a game changer for him, showing a different artistic side and exposing it to a wider audience. Sporting only a guitar, harmonica and stamping, it is a very energetic and intelligent endeavor. It is a tribute by Rush to his hometown, the adopted state, Mississippi, and to the blues pioneers that inspired him, divided equally between classic and "original" covers by Bobby Rush. On its own Deep Rush label in partnership with Thirty Tigers, a simplified tribute to Mississippi's rich blues history with a mix of original and timeless blues classics from Howlin 'Wolf, Muddy Waters, Skip James, Robert Johnson and Sonny Boy Williamson II . "Rawer Than Raw" is a sequel to Rush's totally original 2007 album, Raw, his first acoustic work that proved to be a game changer for him, showing a different artistic side and exposing him to a wider audience. Reduced to the essentials, only guitar, harmonica, vocals and beats can be heard on this album. Rush was rarely recognized for his great harmonica and guitar skills, but you hear a lot of both here. "Rawer Than Raw", is an entirely acoustic collection in that sense. Some of these songs are brown tested by the time they have been played thousands of times, "Dust My Broom" is also included as a tribute to Elmore James, the man who was told, who taught him to Johnson and who finally recorded him in 1951. Rush , you should know that, at 86, he is a Mississippi blues historian, in Rush's hands they never look like tired gender exercises, there is a reliable treatment for the timeless “Dust My Broom”, played with plenty of zip. From the original material, one cannot admire what the bluesman Rush admired in his own work and perhaps only in his record collection. "Rawer Than Raw" is not a repeat of the blues classics mixed with the originals. It's an excellent, raw and authentic release, with Bobby Rush's personal branding on each track. He is one of the best and is still simply creating good music at 86, he is a living legend who shows no signs of slowing down as he struggles to keep the blues alive.
