Boris Tchaikovsky (1925-1996) received his musical education at the Moscow Conservatory, where he studied under Shostakovich, Myaskovsky, and Shebalin. He took advantage of the changes that occurred in Russia in the 1960s, developing his own distinctly Russian musical language, rather than turning to the latest experimental trends from the West, as some of his contemporaries did. The composer is revered in Russian musical circles as one of the most original and innovative composers of the post-Shostakovich generation.
This suite contains 11 movements, the composer employs a stripped-down tonal material with unpredictable waves of chromaticism: what was rigidly stable gradually slips into instability as tonal centers lose their harmonic definiteness. The "War Suite," presents a striking depiction of the horrors of battle, as well as heroism, friendship, and lost love.
