Description
Montemayor, from Torroba's Castillos de Espana, was inspired by a castle of the same name, Montemayor del Rio. This piece is also known as 'Romance de los Pinos', which is the name Segovia decided to use for this piece.
Montemayor, the castle, was built in the 13th C. in the city of Valladolid, Spain. It functioned as a fortress against neighboring factions. Montemayor belonged to Alfonso X and later given to his son Don Pedro, but it ultimately went under the care of the Marquis of Castromonte.
As the subtitle Contemplacion suggests, I wanted to bring the idea of deep, reflective thought to the forefront of this interpretation. I used the sustain and decay of the notes to this end.
