Description
The horribly named Spandau Ballet (look up the meaning) were a group of North London "state school posh" boys who went through a few names and musical styles before settling as part of the early 80's "New Romantic" episode in club youth culture (think big hair, mascara and tablecloths as shawls) which grew as a fancy dress add on to the London and South of England Soul and Gay clubs of the time, although of course it had feet in all camps. Chant No.1 was a 1981 release and the bands best, distiguished from the glaring naffness of their other hits by the dance ryhthm guitar and injection into the recording of fantastic horn work from British jazz-funk - soul group Beggar & Co (who had grown out of British jazz-funk - soul pioneers Light of the World) which absolutely makes the record. That mix of Funk chant and Disco energy balanced against the white boy angst vocal from Tony Hadley (before he went pub singer gone 1930's Hollywood opera) coupled with the cod Soho referencing garbled pseudo lyrics made it a winner and the record was a big pop and club hit .......................A Metropolitan Soul Fave Rave ! #MetropolitanSoul @MetropolitanSoul
