This song is of Irish American origin and was sung in the uptown drawing rooms of Boston and New York during the late 1800’s. And, like most folk songs, it is based on fact.
Although I was singing this song around the folk clubs of Dublin in the sixties, I have no recollection of anybody else singing it, which was unusual at that time, as we all more or less sang the same songs. Although the actor Peter O’Toole did sing a fragment of it in his movie ‘What’s New Pussycat?’
I recorded it as a follow up to ‘Mursheen Durkin’ in 1967
