Of course, credit to Coldplay as well for writing and continuing to perform this beautiful song.
To wish Parachutes a belated 25th birthday, I decided to clean up the "new" version of Sparks to make it less "live", and more in line with the original structurally.
What I did :
- Removed the crowd
- Removed Chris' yapping (sorry, Chris)
- Adjusted the volume of both Chris' voice and the instrumental. as the vocals were quite overbearing before
- Shortened the intro, as I felt the extended one didn't serve much purpose without Chris talking
- Had the ending fade out
- Used the vocals from the original Sparks to make the "ahhh's" and "lalala's" sound a bit fuller
As for my own thoughts on this; I think it's a really sweet version of one of their oldest songs and it's nice to see the band give love to their older work. I don't entirely love the labeling of it as "Dakotas version", so I decided to leave that out of the title (though it is in the tags so more people can find this video), but I do get it as this version is a lot louder in its emotions. To me, it reads almost like a reflection of what the original song was about; a failed relationship now a mere moment in time, one which is now looked back on with warmer feelings. The vocals of the original were sad and hollow, almost hopeless with how broken they sounded at points. Here, the tones shifted drastically, with almost a sense of triumph as Chris belts out "And I know I was wrong". It reads less like a sorrowful plea for forgiveness and more of acknowledgement of past mistakes, and that to me is extremely beautiful. Am I reading too much into a Coldplay song? Absoloutely, but thats the beauty of music really.
