Hal KEMP & His Orchestra – Love For Sale (Cole Porter – Herbert Fields) Fox Trot, Vocal refrain by The Smoothies, Victor 1940 (USA)
NOTE: Hal KEMP (b. 1904 in Marion, Alabama – d. 21st Dec 1940 in Madera, California - from pneumonia developed after injury in his car crash). American jazz alto saxophonist, clarinetist, bandleader, composer and arranger. His band belongs to the best dance orchestras which were active in American music market from the end of the 1920s through the 1930s. This recording was made in Dec 1940 in Hollywood, several weeks before Hal Kemp’s tragic death. His recordings are often presented in this channel.
THE SMOOTHIES (aka Babs And Her Brothers). Excerpt from the Down Beat magazine (1941): "One of the best-liked vocal groups in the game, The Smoothies are now part of the new Art Jarrett band, in its debut at Chicago's Blackhawk restaurant. Charlie and Little Ryan are the boys, Babs Stewart the girl. [Note: Ryan is the boys' last name, they are brothers to each other, not to Babs.]”
The vocal trio, formed in Chicago in 1930, joined Fred Waring's (Pennsylvanians) radio broadcasts in 1933. One of the show's sponsors was Old Gold cigarettes whose slogan was "America's smoothest cigarette". The trio would sing "You're An Old Smoothie" during the commercials, hence the origin of their alternate name "The Smoothies".
