Description
The tune is played on a transverse flute by Giovanni Tardino. The original melody survives along with several other pieces in a 12th century manuscript - the Troparium de Catania in Palermo in Sicily. At the time, Sicily was under Norman rule so this gives us a tantalising glimpse into their music.
The transverse flute was well known throughout the medieval period, though it appears to have dropped off in popularity somewhat in the 14th century - perhaps due to the new fangled recorders that were all the rage!
