Description
The coqui (Eleutherodactylus coqui) is a frog native to Puerto Rico. The fact that coquis are very loud – with nighttime choruses hitting 70 to 80 decibels (which is roughly as loud as a kitchen blender) – never seemed to bother locals. On the contrary, because coquis have always been a part of the island’s life, they are worshipped; they are mentioned in songs, made into plush toys, and are the loving subjects of children’s books.
Sometime in the late 80s however, a coqui, or some coqui eggs, made an involuntary voyage from Puerto Rico to Hawaii (most likely stowed away in a shipment). Because coqui-predators are almost entirely missing in Hawaii, the frog proliferated rapidly. In just three decades, the population of coquis reached a staggering number of 91,000 coquis per hectare, an amount that severely affects the island’s ecosystem.
In contrast with Puerto Rico, Hawaii is a very quiet place, perhaps one of the quietest inhabited places on earth. And now there are coquis, described by National Geographic as the loudest amphibian in the world, disrupting that tranquility.
