The "Coventry Carol" is a hauntingly beautiful 16th-century English Christmas carol, originally performed in Coventry, England. This carol was part of the medieval mystery play The Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors, which tells the Christmas story and references the Massacre of the Innocents, when King Herod ordered the death of male infants in Bethlehem.

This lullaby-like hymn is sung from the perspective of mothers mourning their doomed children.

🔹 The background artwork in this video is inspired by the famous painting "Massacre of the Innocents" by Pieter Bruegel the Elder. The painting reimagines the tragic scene in a snowy Netherlandish village.

🔹 The Massacre of the Innocents is commemorated on December 28th in Catholic, Lutheran, and Anglican traditions, marking the fourth day of Christmastide.
