From my second album, “The Irish-American’s Song,” this is one of the six Confederate Irish songs I have found and recorded. Song for the Irish Brigade, attributed to “Shamrock” of the “Sumpter Rifles” appeared as a Confederate song in Frank Moore’s “songster” or song book, “Rebel Rhymes and Rhapsodies” (G. P. Putnam, NY 1864). It celebrates the military prowess of a mythical Southern Irish Brigade with references to heroic Irishmen of the past, including Brian Boru, Hugh O’Neill, and the aforementioned 18th century Irish Brigade in French service, with their battle cry of "Faugh-a-ballagh!" (Clear the way!), used universally by Irish soldiers, North and South. The tune used is actually a melding of two different melodies, the vocal from a song known as Martinmas Time, the instrumental sections from a hornpipe called The Green Flag. (Liner notes by Joseph G. Bilby)
