Description

One of the great mysteries of @PorcupineTreeOfficial is why the title track of their 2005 album Deadwing isn't regarded in the same vein as its prog epic counterparts, Arriving Somewhere Not Here and The Start of Something Beautiful. The band themselves have never performed the song live beyond the Deadwing tour. Yet Deadwing has remained one of my favorite PT songs of all time thanks to its diverse combination of enigmatic guitar chords, crushing blues-y metal riffing and ambient electronic textures. Thanks to @StevenWilsonHQ Richard Barbeiri, Gavin Harrison and Colin Edwin's work, this is yet another PT song that conjures imagery in my head when I listen to it, and I felt it was time to express that imagery in this latest Gothik Serpent rendition.

As is now expected of any cover of Steven Wilson-related material, doing Deadwing justice required putting together a vast array of guitar, bass, and synthesizer sounds that have to sound exactly right in order to bring out the power of its individual sections. Compared to other PT epics, this one was relatively easy from a performance standpoint, so its unique challenge lay in getting the basic guitars, bass and drums to have the necessary punch. This involved quadruple tracking, layering multiple tracks running different amp sims, experimenting with phase inversion, and weaving different forms of bass distortion together.

The video component was significantly more involved, given that this is a very visual song. Some of the locations captured throughout Singapore include Orchard Road, Marina Bay during the iLight festival, Redhill, and Raffles Place.
