Description
Bobby McFerrin (Born 1950- ) is an American singer, songwriter, and conductor. His vocal technique includes singing fluidly while making rapid and significant pitch jumps, quickly switching between modal and falsetto registers. He performs both the main melody and the accompaniment parts, often tapping his mouth and chest or producing percussion effects from his mouth. Additionally, he is capable of multiphonic singing.
In an interview with Daniel Levitin, McFerrin revealed that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, which prompted him to sell his home in rural Pennsylvania and move to San Francisco.
"Don't Worry Be Happy" is the only acapella song to reach number one, created entirely with voice without using any instruments. At the 1989 Grammy Awards, "Don't Worry Be Happy" won the awards for Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. In 2024, the single was selected for preservation in the U.S. National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
