Melodies Of The White Nights is a 1978 Soviet movie which tells the tender love story of a Russian composer and a Japanese pianist, who both speak the common language of music, and fall in love in spite of their language and cultural differences, hence signifying the universality of music.
Isaac Schwartz (1923 - 2009) was one of the Soviet Union's most famous composer for the cinema. He also wrote symphonies and other large scale works. He was a child prodigy, who spent his childhood in exile after his father was executed for counter-revolutionary activities. After his exile, he was helped and influenced by Dmitry Shostakovich, the foremost Soviet composer at that time.
This theme from Melodies Of The White Nights is hauntingly beautiful, and is here arranged for the violin and piano. The melody simply repeats itself in the mind long after the music is over.
