Description
[SWITCH ON SUBTITLES] @DuranDuran live at PSD Bank Dome Düsseldorf 2025-06-24. "Planet Earth" defined New Romantic style in 1981. It was the first single (before Careless Memories and Girls On Film), but the better (or actually more romantic?) song was maybe "Anyone Out There", unfortunately very rare in life shows. And personally, I like the Night Boat even better - check out this nice recording from July 1981: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dxagj4g2-70 In summer 1980, singer Simon had joined, they quickly got a handful of songs together, sent tapes around (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zqp1fKLFbls), were chosen to support Hazel O'Conor in Nov, immediately signed by EMI, first single out in Feb, album in June, and next one "Rio" just 11 months later.
I read a newspaper article yesterday mentioning that this was the first show in Germany in 13 years, and the first one in Düsseldorf ever. Simon LeBon repeated this fake news at the show. I was actually at the Big Live Thing tour at Philips Halle (now Mitsubishi Electric Halle) in 1988. So that's that. But no further flaws were discovered at this show ;-) Compared to Zeebrugge Live is Live Festival 3 years ago this was much, much better. The band seemed to enjoy themselves, were agile, communicative, they all smiled a lot. Simon seems fitter somehow. Unfortunately, Roger never really gets the spotlight behind his huge drum kit. The video animation, the light show, everything quite perfect. Only for people in the very back of the venue, a live video projection would be nice. They had a couple newer songs, but focused on all their hits. 80% of the songs was from the 80s (and 90s). I just wish they'd play a few more of the non-singles from that time, ballads like To The Shore, Too Late Marlene, Hold Me, A Matter of Feeling, American Science, New Religion, Winter Marches On, Palomine, The Edge of America, My Antarctica, but also dance stuff like My Own Way, Hold Back The Rain, Last Chance on the Stairway, Of Crime And Passion, Union Of The Snake, Shadows On Your Side, Downtown. I'd really love a kind of such b-side show in a tiny venue, with blood and sweat dripping from the ceiling. OK, back to this one. I can sing along all the old songs. So you can imagine I still thoroughly enjoy myself here very very much. I was 1987 in Cologne, 1988 in Düsseldorf, 1993 in Cologne, 2008 in Cologne, 2022 in Zeebrugge, 2025 in Düsseldorf.

Duran Duran "Planet Earth" (Duran Duran 1981) Lyrics:
[Verse 1: Simon Le Bon]
Only came outside to watch the night fall with the rain
I heard you making patterns rhyme
Like some new romantic looking for the TV sound
You'll see I'm right some other time, love
[Chorus: Simon Le Bon, Andy Taylor & John Taylor]
Look now, look all around, there's no sign of life
Voices, another sound, can you hear me now?
This is Planet Earth, you're looking at Planet Earth
Bop bop bop bop bop bop bop bop, this is Planet Earth
[Verse 2: Simon Le Bon]
My head is stuck on something precious
Let me know if you're coming down to land
Is there anybody out there trying to get through?
My eyes so cloudy I can't see you
[Chorus: Simon Le Bon, Andy Taylor & John Taylor]
(same as above)
[Interlude]
[Chorus: Simon Le Bon, Andy Taylor & John Taylor]
(same as above)
[Outro: Simon Le Bon, Andy Taylor & John Taylor]
Bop bop bop bop bop bop bop bop, calling Planet Earth
Bop bop bop bop bop bop bop bop, looking at Planet Earth
Bop bop bop bop bop bop bop bop, this is Planet Earth
Bop bop bop bop bop bop bop bop…
