Description
Hard Sun is a song by American singer, musician, and songwriter Eddie Vedder, who is best known as the lead vocalist and one of the guitarists of the rock band Pearl Jam. The song is a cover of a 1989 track by Canadian artist Gordon Peterson, also known as Indio. Vedder recorded Hard Sun for his first solo album, Into the Wild, which is the soundtrack for the 2007 film of the same name, directed by Sean Penn.
The film Into the Wild is based on the 1996 non-fiction book by Jon Krakauer, which tells the true story of Christopher McCandless, a young man who left behind his privileged life and embarked on a journey across North America, eventually reaching the Alaskan wilderness, where he lived in an abandoned bus for several months.
The song Hard Sun reflects McCandless’ quest for freedom, adventure, and connection with nature, as well as his struggle to survive in harsh conditions. The chorus, “There’s a big, a big hard sun, beating on the big people in the big hard world,” suggests the challenges and difficulties that McCandless and others face in their lives, and the need to find meaning and happiness in spite of them. The song also expresses McCandless’ love for the woman he left behind, and his realization that happiness is only real when shared with others.
Hard Sun is one of the most popular songs from Vedder’s album, and received positive reviews from critics and fans. It was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song in 2008, but lost to “Guaranteed”, another song by Vedder from the same album.
