ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
The twilight at the voluminous outside stadium Théâtre Antique was ablaze with the dynamic sextet El Comité, a collective group of superb musicians from the Cuban diaspora who magically combine their Latin jazz tradition with the contemporary language of jazz. All members show their mastery on their instruments as they lift their catchy melodies into a harmonic and rhythmic party that invites the audience on some songs to sing along (i.e., one number hooks onto “If you want a feeling…”).
The band’s story goes back to a pick-up, all-star Cuban diaspora show in Toulouse in 2017 with the members all having grown up together. They went their separate ways to perform solo and as support members in other bands. So, it took several years for the band to reassemble and reconnect with their vibrancy and joy. That comes through in their hand-clapping, dance-grooved music that completely won over the crowd—enough so to call them back for encores.
The polyrhythms were charged by drummer Rodney Barreto and percussionist Yaroldy Abreu, the lead was propelled by tenor and soprano saxophonist Irving Acao and trumpeter Carlos Sarduy—one of the featured artists. Keyboardist Rolando Luna, the other instrumental star, dazzled on the keys. El Comité went for gold with special guest vocalist Laura Prince who not only sang into the heart of the fast-moving tunes, but also danced them into ecstasy.
