This is the original version of the immortal Christmas classic, Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer, as released on Kim-Pat Records (#KP2984) in November 1979, Oink Records (tan label only) KP2984 in December 1989, and Soundwaves NSD/SW4658, in 1981. This version on Soundwaves was in print through at least 1983, but in November 1982 they re-released the single on Oink records again, with the release number slightly modified to KP-2984. That time around, the single was issued with new recordings of both sides, soon to be found on their Oink LP of Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer, which was then finally picked up by Epic records for national release. In the time since then, the original master for this original version has been destroyed, and the only place to find the original released version is on the singles I've listed (plus the UK release on Stiff Records). This is not the more common version found on radio these days, and perhaps that might be why I prefer it over the more common one. I'd say you could hear great records like this one live every night at www.topshelfoldies.org, but I'm sure there would be some disagreements as to whether any DJ on Topshelf would ever play this, or if it could ever be considered a "great" recording.
