Description
The edelweiss flower (Leontopodium alpinum) is a mountain flower native to Alpine regions in Europe, predominately found in Southern Germany, Austria and Switzerland. It is described as having white hairs and appearing wooly, or tomentose.
The edelweiss flower has a long history in Germany, specifically in the military. Beginning in World War One, where soldiers would travel up into the mountains and pick out the flower to prove themselves as true soldiers. The flower also inspired the name for the anti-Nazi 'juvenile' group known as the 'Edelweiss Pirates', who fought against the Nazi party in Germany.
