Description
The ultimate feminist anthem! Originally, Eurythmics wanted to record the song with Tina Turner, but Turner was unavailable at the time, so they flew to Detroit and recorded the song with late Queen Of Soul, Aretha Franklin. Personally, I believe Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart made the perfect choice in choosing Franklin. The song also features three members of Tom Petty's Heartbreakers; guitarist Mike Campbell, drummer Stan Lynch, and keyboardist Benmont Tench, as well as session bassist Nathan East.
In 1985, "Sisters Are Doin' It For Themselves" was released to great chart success, and was even nominated for a Grammy for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. In the US, the song peaked at #18 on the Billboard Hot 100, #22 on the Cash Box Top 100, #10 on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart, #21 on the Billboard Dance Singles Sales chart, and #66 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop songs chart.
In the Netherlands, it reached #17 on the Single Top 100 and #20 on the Dutch Top 40 charts. The song was a Top 10 hit in Ireland (#5), New Zealand (#6), Finland (#9), Europe (#9), and the UK (#9). It also reached #15 in Australia, #20 in Switzerland, #22 in West Germany, #28 in Belgium, and #33 in Canada.
This is the single 45 version.
