Description
The words of this song were written by Robert Burns (1759-1796), originally presented in a lyrical poem entitled "Sweet Afton" from 1786 or 1791. The poem describes the Afton Water in Ayrshire, Scotland. One source cites Alexander Hume (1560-1609) as the author of the melody. Hume's "Hymns and Sacred Songs" appeared in 1599. Another source cites Jonathan Edwards Spilman (1812-1896) as the composer who set the words to music in 1837 under the title "Flow Gently, Sweet Afton." Spilman was a Kentucky lawyer, minister and composer. There is a variation to the Christmas carol "Away in a Manger" which utilizes this very same melody. Years ago I heard this tune on an LP album entitled "Season's Greetings: the Fantastic Strings of Felix Slatkin," recorded on the Liberty Premier label. This recording also was released by Capitol/ EMI in cassette form.
Performed upon my vintage Patti Bros accordion, a 3/5 reed instrument in LMM configuration.
