The idea of the song from America to Africa was inspired by the famous airlift of Kenyan students to America through the intervention of Thomas Joseph Odhiambo Mboya, a trade unionist, educator, Pan-Africanist, author, and independence activist. David Amunga thought he had a good chance to be selected as among the students who were to benefit from the scholarship however, his friend Ben Blastus was picked. David was disappointed and afterward he tried to imagine how his friend would feel while in America and when returning home. Out of his imagination, David wrote the song from America to Africa.
