This year marks 45 years since we staged West Side Story as our school play. At the time, we made a promise—to reunite one day and perform it once more. Sadly, that never came to pass, and now we are scattered across the world.

I shall be tagging some of you in this post and urge you to share it with the others. I challenge each of you to sing the songs and send them to me via email at cyborg@hotmail.co.za or through WeTransfer. My aim is to recreate them all, using the original soundtrack.

It was West Side Story, along with the unforgettable sight of Mr Stoltz at the piano—while we fumbled over the lyrics—that first planted the seed of what would later become known as karaoke. Little did you know that, armed with my uncle’s Apple E computer and a JVC VHS machine, I had already begun experimenting. With my mother’s treasured original LP and an orchestral instrumental version I had managed to obtain, I attempted to piece it together.

Oh, how I wish we had had the technology then that I have access to now! Our production was nothing short of remarkable. I was once told that it had been recorded on video, possibly by either Mr Lombard or Mr van Vuuren, but I was never able to secure a copy. Yet, even without a recording, the memory of it remains indelibly imprinted in our minds.
