STORYLINE
Thousands of Palestinians turned out on the streets of Gaza City on Tuesday, to take part in a funeral procession of a local Hamas militant leader killed by Israeli forces.
Israeli ground troops, backed by helicopters, tanks and snipers, had surrounded the home of Ayman Hassanin, a local leader in the military wing of the ruling Hamas group, witnesses said.
Gunmen streamed to the area. A fierce gunbattle erupted, and Aymen Hassanin was killed, Hamas said.
The Israeli army confirmed that Hassanin's home had been surrounded in an arrest raid, but said troops opened fire at the house only after militants fired bullets and mortars at the soldiers first.
The death came as the Israeli military launched a three-pronged offensive in the northern Gaza Strip early on Tuesday, in its latest operation against Palestinian rocket squads.
Meanwhile, Palestinians have surrounded a house in Gaza City on Tuesday, saying the owner, a Hamas activist, had received a warning from Israel that the house was to be targeted.
Such demonstrations foiled three previous Israeli attacks on houses in recent days.
The Israeli military has intensified its offensive against rocket-launchers in Gaza in recent weeks, even though rocket attacks have only increased since a weeklong incursion in the northern town of Beit Hanoun earlier this month, which culminated in the killing of 18 civilians by Israeli artillery fire.
The violence in Gaza has been accompanied in recent months by increasing poverty brought on by international sanctions slapped on the Hamas-led government that took power in March.
