1st Verse:
Cabrillo saw southern Oregon
'til the 1800s French trapping was on
Britain's Columbia District with Americans along
Discouraged settlement to allow the trade to be won
To the Willamette Valley on the Oregon trail
Find a government led by Hill, Beers and Gale
Make it a territory - after the Whitman tale
Then came the thousands who would settle there
Explanation of the 1st Verse:
During Juan Cabrillo's exploration of the west coast in 1543, he was the first European to set eyes on what is now Oregon (OR).
French Canadians trappers and missionaries settled throughout the 1800s in OR.
During the first ½ of the 1800s the British started taking control of the OR area calling it the "Columbia District." The Americans who began to settle there called it the "Oregon Country."
Major settlement in OR was actually discouraged until 1841. The trappers feared that a large influx of settlers would interfere with the booming fur trade.
The Oregon Trail was the path from Independence, MO that many trappers took to arrive in the Willamette Valley in OR.
In 1843 the American settlers established an independent government in the Oregon Country headed by an executive committee - David Hill, Alanson Beers, and Joseph Gale.
The Oregon Country remained independent until the U.S. government made it the Oregon Territory in 1848. This was necessary because of the danger that the natives posed to the settlers. Specifically, the government stepped in after a family (the Whitmans) were massacred by indians.
Over the next 10 years many Americans traveled along the Oregon Trail to settle in OR.
Chorus:
Here in Oregon Country
A Government built up on pelts and trade
Once shared with the Hudson Bay Company
But Polk made a compromise to hold the 49th
We're giving land away
A Donation Claim in 1850
Blazed a trail from Independence Missouri
North and west up to the Willamette Valley
The Beaver State fur money
In the land of milk and honey
Explanation of the Chorus:
The Oregon Country was an independent government established by the American fur traders and settlers who were in OR in 1843.
During this time, the Americans coexisted with British trappers/traders from the Hudson Bay Company in what they called their "Columbia District."
In 1844 President Polk started to remove the British from the Oregon Country. He ended up compromising, defining our northern border with British Canada at the 49th parallel.
In an attempt to settle this new OR land, the government passed the Donation Land Act 1850. It gave land away (320 acres per person, 640 per couple) to those who would travel and settle in OR for four years.
The Donation Land Act caused the Oregon Trail to explode with activity. Hundreds of thousands of settlers started their trek in Independence, MO and traveled north and west arriving in the Willamette Valley (Oregon City) to claim this free land.
OR is called the Beaver State because the area started as a hub for trapping and trade - due to the many streams, beaver pelts were a common and profitable good.
At the end of the Oregon Trail is the Willamette Valley. This was called the land of milk and honey because the rich soil promoted growth of many crops.
2nd Verse:
Snake your way up a river border of the east
Then the Columbia, past Portland, northern border to the sea
Or trek to Oregon City, Salem, Albany
To find the rich rich soil of the Willamette Valley
Flanked by Mountains to the west is the coast range
Ring of Fire, Mt. Hood in the east Cascade
Calapooya in the south close to Crater Lake
Go east, for a high desert state

Bridge:
She flies with her own wings
Across the Pacific Northwest while the meadowlark sings
La la la la la
Knowing the Oregon grape will be close to the sea
She flies with her own wings
'oer the swaying sound of the douglas fir trees
Oh yeah, stronger than concrete
We're the 33rd, if you please

3rd Verse:
The Hudson Bay Company and mountain men
Gathered beaver pelts along the many rivers, then
Gold in the 1860s brought miners in
A hub for shipping and logging yeah Portland
We helped to build the west, hooray the CCC
Hydroelectric dams on - our Northwest streams
While our shipyards, lumber and fisheries
Surge like electricity
