Description
In this video, I explore one of the rarest varieties of Raga Anand Bhairav in Khayal tradition — the Gwalior tradition as practiced in Punjab. This particular Raga-Roop subtly weaves together shades of both Raga Bilawal and Bhairav, employing two distinct Rishabhas to create its unique character.
I begin with a Bada Khayal — Allah Ko Yaad Rakhiye — a seldom-heard gem from the repertoire of Ustad Sindhe Khan. This is followed by a Chhota Khayal — Una Bin Jiyara Nikaso Jaat — set in Drut Roopak Tala. Interestingly, this composition was originally a Dhrupad by the medieval composer Chanchal Sen, and has been thoughtfully reimagined as a Khayal by Dr. Ashok Da Ranade.
It is always a privilege to delve into such rare musical treasures and share them with you.
Gaan Parimal (गान परिमल) was a special concert featuring rare Khayal compositions in uncommon Ragas from the repertoire of Ustad Sindhe Khan, Prof. B. R. Deodhar, and Dr. Ashok Da Ranade. This thematic program, curated by Dr. Chaitanya Kunte under the ‘Performance from Archives’ series, marked the 10th anniversary of the ‘Dr. Ashok Da Ranade Archives’ and was organized by Maharashtra Cultural Centre, Pune.
The concert was held on Sunday, 27th October 2024, at Jyotsna Bhole Auditorium, Hirabaug, Pune.
I thank my fellow musicians — Nikhil Phatak (Tabla), Dr. Chaitanya Kunte (Harmonium), Dr. Nimish Utpat and Hrishikesh Patil (Tanpura) — for their support. A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Chaitanya and Shruti Kunte, the program coordinators, for their efforts behind the scenes.
