Description
Garvin Blake - October 1, 2022 - Anthony’s Cari-Jazz Artiste of the Day
Garvin Blake was born in Trinidad and Tobago. He began playing pan at seven. At age nine, he and his family immigrated to the United States. In 1975, Garvin began playing with local Brooklyn steel bands. While still a teenager, he was mentored by Clive Bradley, the legendary Trinidadian composer/arranger. Garvin is primarily self-taught, gaining most of his knowledge in the pan yards of Brooklyn and learning from the mentorship of more experienced musicians.
Garvin would go on to play and arrange music for several notable steel orchestras such as Metro Steel, Despers USA and Pan Rebels Steel Orchestras in New York, where he’s known for his clean, modern style. He also played for Desperadoes and Pandemonium in Trinidad.
While playing in traditional steel bands, Garvin began exploring jazz. And in the music of Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, and Duke Ellington he found his musical passion. With time and practice, jazz improvising became Garvin’s main vehicle for self-expression. He would also form lasting musical relationships with noted Caribbean musicians Frankie McIntosh and the late Raf Robertson. Garvin was the guest pannist on the album “Branches,” a musical tribute to Trinidad Calypsonian Lord Kitchener with Trinidadian pianist Raf Robinson.
Garvin’s much anticipated first solo work Belle Eau Road Blues features a funky fusing of many of his life influences --- jazz motifs, various African percussion, and Caribbean rhythms. Other artistes appearing on the CD include world renowned South African pianist Tony Cedras, drummer Damon Duewhite, bassist Gene Torres, famed Caribbean keyboardist Frankie McIntosh and Trinidad’s own superstar, and special guest artist, David Rudder.
On Parallel Overtones, his follow-up CD, he brings a high level of technical sophistication and intelligence to his craft. Meticulous attention to detail is apparent in the skilful convergence of steel pan, calypso, and jazz.
Garvin has played at Lincoln Centre’s Alice Tully Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Centre Rose Theatre,
The Brooklyn Centre for the Performing Arts and many of New York City’s leading jazz venues. He also played in jazz and music festivals in the Caribbean, and most recently The Rhythms of Spice Festival in Grenada in June 2019.
