Description
Gary Wright came to prominence via the band Spooky Tooth and charter members guitarist Luther Grosvenor, vocalist Mike Harrison, drummer Mike Kellie, bassist Greg Ridley and keyboardist/vocalist Gary Wright in October 1967. After two albums Gary decided to leave and join Wonderwheel and recorded one album with them.
Then Warners sought him out for a solo deal, and Wright felt that Warner could use a keyboard based artist and it was a marriage made in heaven. Gary's first album provided him with 2 #2 hits, "Dream Weaver" and "Love Is Alive". The album reached #7 on the Album Chart.
The inspiration for "Dream Weaver" came from the "Autobiography of a Yogi", a book which was given to him by George Harrison. Paramahansa Yogananda's poem "God! God! God!" mentioned "the idea of the mind weaving dreams". John Lennon also helped to popularize the expression "Dream Weaver" with his 1970 song "God" which included the lyrics
I was the dreamweaver
But now I'm reborn
I was the walrus
But now I'm John
And so dear friends
You just have to carry on
The dream is over.
Wright did not another hit until "Really Wanna Know You" in 1981.
